Columbia Southern University has partnered with the Alabama Fire College (AFC) to offer the NFPA 1021: Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications online Fire Officer I training. CE 1003: Fire Officer I is offered as a stand-alone continuing education course that may lead to IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification.

Students will be producing written projects investigating the basic responsibilities and duties of the level I Company Officer. Using real-world scenarios, students will learn and discuss the importance of listening skills, written, oral, and emergency scene communications. Students will explain the process of performing pre-incident investigations and developing pre-incident plans; describe the effects of fire on different building types; learn the role of HR management and how it applies to level I Company Officer; explain the purpose of goals of company level training and discuss concepts of leadership and supervision.

Upon successful completion of CE 1003 with a grade of 70% or higher on each assignment, students receive a Certificate of Completion. They will also be eligible to apply for the certification exam administered by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission.

These programs are not eligible for Federal Student Aid, military tuition assistance, VA funding or Learning Partner discounts.

Prerequisites to Take Certification Exam

Prerequisites to take the certification exam with Alabama Fire College are as follows:

• IFSAC or ProBoard Certified Fire Fighter II and IFSAC or ProBoard Certified Fire Instructor I.
• Successful completion of all coursework in CE 1003: Fire Officer I with a grade of 70% or higher on each assignment.
• For certification testing to occur in another accredited agency’s jurisdiction, AFC must have prior approval from that agency before testing can occur.

NOTE: The student may choose to sit for the Fire Officer I certification exam in their current jurisdiction. In that event, the student is responsible for completion of the requirements for that jurisdiction.
